A live-action movie based on the Avatar: the Last Airbender series will be released on July 2, 2010 in the US and August 6, 2010 in the UK. It's entitled The Last Airbender ('Avatar' was dropped due to title conflicts with James Cameron's film: Avatar). It will be the first of a planned trilogy and will be based on the first season of the cartoon series.
It is being directed and produced by M. Night Shymalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Lady in the Water) who expressed interest in the series after watching it with his kids. Paramount Pictures who have budgeted $300 million for the trilogy.
When the news of a live-action movie first came out, fans were estatic. However, the casting for the movie has provoked an escalating ball of negative emotions. The cartoon series has clear Asian roots and influences and the fact that the majority of the actors were Caucasian led to campaigns, protests and even boycots.
Even with all the complaints, production for the movie is still heading strong and the official trailor was played during Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The movie has recieved lots of publicity and there are many fans who are looking forward to it.
